My work experience placement at DF Legal was an unforgettable and extremely valuable experience, during which I was made to feel extremely welcome. I was able to gain a better understanding of what the day to day role of a barrister entails, as well as how a law firm as whole functions.
The placement began in the firm’s Tewkesbury office, where I was met by Marketing Coordinator Kate Allen, who gave me a tour of the building, gave me a general overview of the setup and introduced me to various members of the Tewkesbury team. I was given a task related to conveyancing, which involved looking at information surrounding DF Legal’s ‘First Time Buyers Club’ and using the Law Society Conveyancing Protocol to draft a simplified document that explained how the Law works in this way. During the day, I also spent time looking at how the firm maintains its reputation within the community, particularly utilising social media and offering opinions on controversial and interesting things that are currently happening in the legal field.
The experience confirmed to me that I want to pursue a career in Law
The rest of my placement was spent at the firm’s Cheltenham office. Here, I was able to chat to the firm’s in-house barrister, Jack Henry, who detailed his journey to becoming a barrister and gave me the chance to ask any questions that I had. I was also able to find out about trainee solicitor, Kamrul Zaman’s, experiences which gave me an insight into the other side of the legal profession. I found this particularly valuable as it made the process of pursuing a legal career seem far less daunting! Jack then allowed me to read through some of the court bundles from his previous cases as well as the skeleton argument for the case he was due to be in court for that afternoon. I was then able to attend court with Jack and Kamrul for the case, which was about an ongoing boundary dispute. I was extremely excited to attend court as this was something I had never done before and it was great to see a barrister in action, including how he dealt with a client to provide the best possible outcome and negotiated with the judge.
While shadowing Jack, I was also able to look at a lot of different cases and do a lot of the things he, as a barrister, would be doing. He allowed me to draft a C100 form, which is an application to the court under the 1989 Children’s Act. He also allowed me to look at a CAFCASS (Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service) report for one of his cases, where I picked out important aspects which may harm or impact the case in court. Throughout the day, I was also able to look at cases on divorce, wills and probate, a pre-nuptial agreement as well as other family law cases and this enabled me to look at a wide variety of aspects of law.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my placement with DF Legal and felt that the days went far too quickly! Everyone at the firm was really friendly and willing to answer any questions I had. The experience confirmed to me that I want to pursue a career in Law, and I would highly recommend a placement at DF Legal to anyone who is interested in the legal profession!
